August 9, 10 2007 Flower Gardens Trip Report by Captain Frank

We took 19 divers out to see the Flower Gardens on a perfect weather trip. Outside temps were 100+ degrees during the day, and the surface water is at 86 degrees, which is not a good sign. There were critters on the banks, however. On the West Bank, I saw the biggest spotted moray I have ever seen, the smallest southern stingray, and a medium sized (and very cute) peacock flounder. Other larger rays were cruising through the dive site, and Melanie spotted a marbled grouper. We moved onto the East Bank for three more dives, where the divers saw a turtle, nurse shark, lots of grouper, and the normal small stuff.

We dove Stetson Friday morning, and were treated to a huge loggerhead turtle, two reef sharks maybe 18” long, a monster yellowfin grouper, a small yellowmouth, juvenile fish of all variety, monster lobster, jawfish, mantis shrimp, basically everything one could ask for. Conditions on Stetson were perfect with 5 knots of wind, no current, water temp 86, seas flat calm, and great customers. It was a great trip for diving.
