With just 18 intrepid (read weren’t scared
of 3-4 foot seas going out) divers, we set
out to the west bank for a weekend of
diving. We arrived at the West bank to
find that the seas had dropped to 2-3’, the
current was snortin’, and the water temp was
84 degrees. Winds were 10-15 most of the
weekend. The fascinating critters spotted
included a 5 foot moray, black durgeon, and
tons of bait fish up in the water. This
would prove to be the cause of Monday’s
sightings, but we’re not there yet. We moved
onto HI-389 in the afternoon, and saw the
same old friendly loggerhead, some
unidentified generic sharks, and lots of
reef fish. After the rig dive, we dove the
East bank, where we saw turtles, nurse
shark, reef shark, a gang of amberjack, and
lots and lots of barracuda.
We woke up on Sunday morning on Stetson.
Stetson was the hit of the weekend, with a
light current, calm seas, 83 degree water,
and thousands of little reef fish. Melanie
and I saw a mustached jawfish with eggs,
both male and female, lots of big and little
mantis shrimp, unicorn filefish, clear
water, and a sandbar shark. He was doing the
“swim up and stare at the diver” routine. A
few saw a load of silky sharks also.
Everyone said they had a great time, and I
believe them.
