We took a full boat out to Stetson Bank
for 2 days of diving Stetson. The weather
was reasonable for late September, and
conditions on Stetson were fantastic, as
they have been all season. The current was
non-existent when we showed up and tied to
buoy # 1. Divers used the buoy number 1
dives to get their feel of the water, and of
the boat, and not much was reported on this
dive. I saw a pair of small sharks, and
other sharks were spotted also. After two on
Buoy 1, we moved to buoy #3 for the rest of
the day. We spotted a manta ray, more
sharks, lobster on the night dive, and all
of the eels, scorpion fish, and other
creatures you would expect on Stetson. We
moved to Buoy 5 for our second morning, and
1 diver found a whole school of silky
sharks. Unfortunately, he found them at 139
feet, so he got to rinse his gear early.
Others saw the same sharks, but at a
shallower depth. The fire coral at Stetson
is quite badly bleached, but will recover
with cooler water. Conditions were 1-2 foot
seas, mild current in the mornings, a little
stronger in the afternoons, water temp 87,
vis over 80 feet. I don’t think most of our
divers knew that they were on a Stetson only
trip, but they didn’t really care, either.
