It was a pretty quiet Stetson only trip,
with only 15 passengers and 11 crewmembers
onboard. We set out from Freeport in calm
seas for Stetson Bank, and dove there all
weekend. We tied up to Buoy #3 at 0600
(What’s the “0” stand for? “0” my god, it’s
early) to find a mild surface current, seas
1-2 feet, water temp 85, and a sandbar
shark. There were lots of smaller critters
too, including banded coral shrimp, jawfish,
Mantis shrimp, and the divers had a close
encounter with a loggerhead sea turtle.
After lunch, we moved to buoy #1, where a
queen triggerfish, lots of eels, little tiny
baby scorpion fish, and other juveniles were
hanging out, and the same turtle was now
making a pest of herself, swimming up to the
divers and all.
Sunday morning continued with the mild
surface current, 100+ feet of visibility,
and the sandbar shark. An octopus was
spotted by many divers, as well as cowries,
conch, drums, and the usual selection of
platter-sized angelfish.
Although it was quiet, it was a beautiful
weekend to hang out on Stetson Bank and
enjoy the diving.
