Oriskany II, September 23-25 Trip Report by Captain Frank

The weather gods smiled on us this trip. Dory Phillips brought 7 divers, students, and some other instructors from Texas and Florida to spend a long weekend on the Oriskany just out of Pensacola, FL. The weather couldn't have been better with smooth seas, warm water, visibility from 20 to 100 feet, and very little current. The jellies are still here, though.

We departed the dock early in the morning on Friday and made it to the Oriskany by 7 AM. Brian and Melanie jumped in to set the mooring in the same place we had it last weekend. Visibility was poor all the way to the flight deck, but that would improve all weekend. Water temps were 78 on the surface and 74 on the bottom, but the bone numbing thermocline that was here last weekend was all gone. The moon jellies were deeper than they were last weekend, but they would come back to the surface.

We had 3 divers complete their training, with Colm completing advanced nitrox and deco procedures, Jay finishing his trimix Optima class, and Dory completing her evaluation as a trimix instructor. Jim completed normoxic trimix as well. Congratulations to all students for a job well done. Lamar Hires of Dive Rite was on hand to show us the new revision D model of the optima, and he had the Nitek Q dive computer with him too.

We had a great trip with a few missed dives due to ear issues as well as a head cold, but most folks made every dive.

We have one more week in Pensacola before we head for home to celebrate Man-Candy's birthday. We're looking forward to being home again.
